I don’t enjoy large gatherings of people, especially large gatherings of people I don’t know. Being invited is always lovely but I’m usually that person who’s going to politely decline.

This past weekend I attended a party that now I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t.

I was invited over a month ago and at the time even though I was super hesitant about saying yes, the person doing the inviting was important to me so I did say yes. As the date drew nearer I was having second thoughts but he said he wanted me to be there so I wrangled a friend into going with me and I showed up.

Thank goodness I brought a friend! I’m not the type that needs a babysitter at a party or someone to hold my hand but this would have been even more awkward than it already was had I shown up without backup.

You see I knew no one- not a sole- other than the birthday boy who was the one who was supposed to want me there.

When we arrived he did appear to say hello but it was like we were meeting for the first time and I was just another random person who showed up. I didn’t expect him to be glued to my side or even be overly affectionate but it was almost like he was actually avoiding me other than the few times he’d walk past me and smacked my ass. Charming right?

I was contemplating getting out of there after about 10 awkward minutes that felt like an eternity, but decided to let my friend call it when she was ready and casually said to her, “we can go whenever you want, like anytime is good.” She chuckled at me and shook her head, so I sipped my glass of wine (even though I wanted to shoot it) and I ended up spending a couple of hours chatting with my friend and a few of his, some of them were quite nice but when the birthday boy started pointing out a hot girl to his friends (more than once) whilst still ignoring the one (ahem, me) he was supposed to want at this shindig I decided that it was a great time to take my leave. I mean fine, we aren’t a couple, he owes me nothing, he’s free to do what he wants with whom ever he wants but to seriously invite me to his party and then do that like I wasn’t even there. That’s a bit harsh.

I said a quick goodbye to which I got “You’re leaving me?” I’m pretty sure the look on my face wasn’t the sweet smile I was aiming for but at that point in the evening I didn’t much care. He continued speaking asking if “it was past my bedtime.” Past my bedtime??? Seriously?

Basically the entire evening was a total waste of hair and makeup, not to mention my new hot jeans and the guy I’ve spent the last year getting to know and like some how was no where to be found.

I don’t much care for the guy that was at the party, he certainly wasn’t the guy who invited me and definitely was nothing like the guy I’ve spent several evenings with over the past 6 or 7 months, I like that other guy.

It’s not that he’s a bad drunk and he was incredibly drunk. He isn’t a mean drunk or obnoxious or anything but he most certainly isn’t the guy I like either. I’m sure he was the life of the party and he should be, it was his party after all but it also felt like the entire evening was straight out of the book “He’s just not that into you.” We could have saved each other a lot of time if he had just told me the week before that he changed his mind and didn’t actually want me to come after all. (He had the opportunity, when he asked if I was still coming I asked if he really still wanted me to be there.)

The day after the party I did hear from the birthday boy- “How embarrassing was I last night?” Honestly I’m shocked he even knew I was there to ask that question.

If I could go back and not accept his invitation I would but at least now I know for future should I be invited to another party I’m most likely definitely busy that night.

  1. Movie plots are based on no less than this. Don’t be so hard on yourself! You made it out of the house, which, especially in winter, is nothing to be sniffed at.

  2. At least you tried it, which is a bigger step than a lot of us can take. Sorry he was such a jerk. Too much alcohol does not tend to bring out the best in people.
